Prior to that, he helped lead Maryland’s standards-based reforms, including the development of performance-based statewide assessments. As the quote below highlights, teaching is not just about engaging students in content. Student learning and understanding can be gauged more accurately through a backward design approach since it leverages what students will need to know and understand during the design process in order to progress. The knowledge and skills at this substage are considered important to know and do. The information that fits within this question could be the facts, concepts, principles, processes, strategies, and methods students should know when they leave the course. The big ideas and important understandings are referred to as enduring understandings because these are the ideas that instructors want students to remember sometime after they’ve completed the course.

He has extensive experience as a classroom teacher, resource specialist, program coordinator, and in professional development, as a regular speaker at national, state, and district conferences and workshops. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike. He served as director of the Maryland Assessment Consortium, a collaboration of school districts working to develop and share formative performance assessments and helped lead standards-based reforms at the Maryland State Department of Education.

The Three Stages of Backward Design

Furthermore, the answers to question #3 regarding enduring understandings can be adapted to form concrete, specific learning goals for the students; thus, identifying the desired results that instructors want their students to achieve. In Understanding by Design, Wiggins and McTighe argue that backward design is focused primarily on student learning and understanding. When teachers are designing lessons, units, or courses, they often focus on the activities and instruction rather than the outputs of the instruction. Therefore, it can be stated that teachers often focus more on teaching rather than learning. This perspective can lead to the misconception that learning is the activity when, in fact, learning is derived from a careful consideration of the meaning of the activity. Educators from kindergarten through college can get everything they need—guidelines, stages, templates, and tips—to start designing lessons, units, and courses that lead to improved student performance and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

Teaching for understanding

The second question above allows the instructor to focus on more important knowledge, the knowledge and skills that are important to know and do. Finally, with the third question, instructors begin to detail the enduring understandings, overarching learning goals, and big ideas that students should retain. By answering the three questions presented at this stage, instructors will be able to determine the best content for the course.

We empower educators to reimagine and redesign learning through impactful pedagogy and meaningful technology use. We achieve this by offering transformative professional learning, fostering vibrant communities, and ensuring that digital tools and experiences are accessible and effective. Wiggins, a nationally recognized assessment expert, worked on some of the most influential reform initiatives in the country, including Vermont's portfolio system and Ted Sizer's Coalition of Essential Schools. He consulted with schools, districts, and state education departments on a variety of reform matters, organized conferences and workshops, standards clarification, and developed print materials and web resources on curricular change. This teaching guide will explain the benefits of incorporating backward design. Finally, an overview of a backward design template is provided with links to blank template pages for convenience.

Wiggins and McTighe provide an expanded array of practical tools and strategies for designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments that lead students at all grade levels to genuine understanding. The incorporation of backward design also lends itself to transparent and explicit instruction. If the teacher has explicitly defined the learning goals of the course, then they have a better idea of what they want the students to get out of learning activities. Furthermore, if done thoroughly, it eliminates the possibility of doing certain activities and tasks for the sake of doing them.

At this stage it is important to consider a wide range of assessment methods in order to ensure that students are being assess over the goals the instructor wants students to attain. Sometimes, the assessments do not match the learning goals, and it becomes a frustrating experience for students and instructors. Use the list below to help brainstorm assessment methods for the learning goals of the course.

Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. In contrast, the backward design approach has instructors consider the learning goals of the course first. These learning goals embody the knowledge and skills instructors want their students to have learned when they leave the course.

Every task and piece of instruction has a purpose that fits in with the overarching goals and goals of the course. As previously stated, backward design is beneficial to instructors because it innately encourages intentionality during the design process. It continually encourages the instructor to establish the purpose of doing something before implementing it into the curriculum. Therefore, backward design is an effective way of providing guidance for instruction and designing lessons, units, and courses. Once the learning goals, or desired results, have been identified, instructors will have an easier time developing assessments and instruction around grounded learning outcomes. Well known for his work with thinking skills, McTighe has coordinated statewide efforts to develop instructional strategies, curriculum models, and assessment procedures for improving the quality of student thinking.

Once the learning goals have been established, the second stage involves consideration of assessment. The backward design framework suggests that instructors should consider these overarching learning goals and how students will be assessed prior to consideration of how to teach the content. For this reason, backward design is considered a much more intentional approach to course design than traditional methods of design. The first question listed above has instructors consider the knowledge that is worth being familiar with which is the largest circle, meaning it entails the most information.

Linda Darling-Hammond makes the case for expanded use of performance assessments. Yeager has nine bassists, which amounts to about one-fourth of all jazz majors. In any other year, according to Yeager, bassist Royce Ferguson, a junior, would have been at the top of the heap, but this year he’s running neck-in-neck with fellow SDSU student Kevin Delgado, the bassist for San Diego Latin jazz groups Sol E Mar and Afro Rumba. Which means Ferguson is good, and Wednesday night’s junior recital featuring Ferguson should produce some first-rate music. In fact, the modest Wiggins has recorded a library of music that spans some 50 years, including dozens of original songs, making him a living encyclopedia of jazz.

Information that fits within this question is the lowest priority content information that will be mentioned in the lesson, unit, or course. “Last year, I was starved for bass players,” says Bill Yeager, director of jazz studies at San Diego State University. Hofmann wittily turns the tables on usual roles with her version of the Gershwins’ “Embraceable You,” giving Magnusson’s bass the lead melodic role at first while she plays backup counterpoint, then switching into an improv mode while Magnusson thrums along underneath her flute. “It’s some great playing, she’s a wonderful player, just some good jazz,” said Phil Sheridan, vice president of Jazz Alliance, explaining why his company selected Hofmann’s project as one of its 20 releases for 1992. Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona. The only Richard Neutra-designed house that is now open regularly to the public, the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences is a Silver Lake hidden gem that was built by the famed architect in 1932. He ran his practice out of a studio here, and along with his wife Dione, raised three sons in this house, which he designed to demonstrate that Modernist principles could be enjoyed by less affluent clients, while maintaining privacy. Natural light, glass walls, patios and mirrors are hallmarks of the Neutra VDL House.

Judith Penney, who is sometimes described as Ed’s “assistant” or his “liaison,” has alleged that beginning in the early ’60s, Ed Warren, then in his 30s, began grooming her. In 1963, when she was 15, Penney claimed Warren moved her into the Warrens’ house in Bridgeport and commenced a full-blown sexual affair, with Lorraine’s full consent, that lasted until just a few years before Ed’s death in 2006. It must be said, however, that most of these events seem to be the result of a clever hoax. Apparently one of the patrolling police officers at one point noticed the Goodins’ adopted daughter, Marcia, attempting to tip over a television set with her foot.

The legendary parties held at the compound during Hearst and Davies’ tenure had guest lists that often numbered in the thousands. Luminaries such as Howard Hughes, Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, Bette Davis, Carole Lombard, Cary Grant, Winston Churchill, and Gloria Swanson all spent time at the massive estate at one time or another. The Warrens locked it away after working on a case where a student in the 70s experienced some weird occurrences when she was given the doll. She took it to a medium who told her it was possessed and eventually the Warrens were called in. They claim Annabelle is responsible for at least one death, a young man who challenged the doll.

It has been for decades without ever acting up, trying to escape, or anything of the sort — much to the chagrin of horror movie enthusiasts who would enjoy a little more mystery. In 1979, the ghost hunters' daughter met a police officer, Tony Spera. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren first publicized their research into the supernatural in the 50s and went on to author many books and inspire many movies on the chilling subject, including "Anabelle" and the entire "The Conjuring" universe. When this residential house was built by Vienna-born Rudolf Schindler back in inspired by a recent trip to Yosemite with his wife - it was extremely unconventional at the time for a place to live. In reality, it was meant to be a cooperative live-work space between two families, much like a camp site.

There are special events and you can purchase or rent a video tour of the collection. Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren operated for decades as the preeminent voices in the believer community, and their strange career of ghost-hunting and demon-busting is on display in their very own Occult Museum. She felt a connection she had never quite felt with anyone else before and decided to completely open up about her family to him — something she had never done with anyone else. Being such icons in the paranormal field both on-screen and otherwise, the Warrens built a legacy for themselves. Horror movie enthusiasts would undoubtedly be well acquainted with "The Conjuring" movie universe and one particularly terrifying doll, Annabelle. Lorraine often stated that ouija boards, tarot cards, and psychics are often the entry point for many of these beings.

Once they’d been welcomed in, Lorraine would often commune with the spirits, and the couple’s reputations as demonologists and ghost hunters began to grow. When it comes to investigations of the paranormal kind, no two ghost hunters loom larger than Ed and Lorraine Warren. But even if you're familiar with their most famous cases, there's probably still a lot you don't know about the Warrens. Located in Highland Park northeast of Downtown LA, Heritage Square Museum is a living history museum that explores the settlement and development of Southern California during its first 100 years of statehood.

There is a piano, which apparently plays on its own during witching hours. Another one is a toy monkey that is allegedly possessed by a demon, which attempts to kill someone after stalking them. The mirror from, ‘The Conjuring’ is also very much present in the museum. Borley Rectory is considered to be the most haunted house in England. There is also a shadow doll, which allegedly visits its victims in their dreams and stops their heart.

When the museum was open for visits, there was a strict policy on not touching any of the items. However, there is a case of a visitor who allegedly tried to bang on the glass case in some way and got killed in an accident, just hours later. Neutra ran his architectural from the original house from 1932 until a fire destroyed most of the main building in 1963. The Research House was rebuilt with the most modern materials and design adaptations by Neutra and his son Dion in 1966. There is also a Garden House on the property that was occupied by Dion Neutra and his family.

In fact, claims continued to be made even after Marcia admitted to pulling the supposed hoax. The stories of chairs and furniture moving, crucifixes flying off walls, and knives being thrown about were all reported by the likes of firefighters and law enforcement. As such, it seems that the house in Bridgeport, Connecticut is a little more intricate of a story than just some average kook telling tall tales. Spera said the Warrens, helped by their nephew John Zaffis, examined the house and decided it was haunted. Ed and Lorraine were called in to visit the house and decided that it was haunted. Ed and Lorraine were born in Bridgeport, he in 1926 and she in 1927.

And although she’s no longer with us, many including author Bill Hall and the witnesses he’s interviewed tend to believe that there was something supernatural in that house in Bridgeport, Connecticut, at 966 Lindley Street. A spinoff of “The Conjuring,” “The Nun,” in which the Warrens were characters, has a sequel in the works. And if “The Devil Made Me Do It” is a hit, a fourth “Conjuring” movie is inevitable. Like the purported ghosts they investigated, the Warrens keep making their presences known long after their deaths. “The nurse called the priest to do an exorcism on the house and bless the nurse and her roommate. We may never know which is the true version of the Warrens—or whether, like most people who ever became famous for anything, they really exist somewhere on the spectrum between those two poles.

They first encountered it in 1968, when two roommates claimed their Raggedy Ann doll was possessed. Having authored many books about the paranormal and about their private investigations into various reports of paranormal activity, the couple soon became renowned for their craft. They mostly kept their only child, Judy, out of their crazy professional life. While that would make for an incredibly cool story among children —or not, Judy never told anyone what her parents did. In an interview with USA Today, she opened up about her childhood as the infamous Ed and Lorraine Warren's daughter. Of course, it is not every day that a kid can casually tell her friends that her parents are the world's foremost demonologists/ ghost hunters.

In addition to the noise and loitering, she said some drivers would knock over sections of her rock wall, while turning around. If Spera decides to start a permitted museum business, he can now do so in Monroe. After 2016, the Planning & Zoning Commission decided to allow museums in some commercial areas, including Business 1, Business 2 and Limited Office Retail zones. On Sunday, April 8, 2018, Spera emailed Chapman to preempt neighborhood complaints when he invited a television crew to Lorraine Warren’s house for an episode of a TV program on the Travel Channel. Chapman said he submitted a letter with signatures from eight Knollwood Street residents (some were couples) as evidence during the hearing at Town Hall.

The family that resides there regularly encounters its own ancestors, as well as strangers—human and nonhuman—who seemingly occupy the same physical space in parallel worlds. When William J. Hall visited the house, family member Donna Fillie showed him her journal of the paranormal activity she’s experienced there over the years. Here is Donna’s diary spanning five decades of uncanny occurrences, supplemented with background information provided by Hall.

Like many of the Warrens’ stories, reports of their involvement in the alleged Amityville hauntings were greatly exaggerated. In fact, while their skills at exorcism are debatable, their skill at self-promotion remains unmatched. And although the house still stands today, it seems to mostly be disregarded due to Marcia’s confession.

7 Rules in Proportion & Scale That Nail Your Interior Design

However, the steel construction is not just supported by steel columns, beams, and pilotis, but it is only part of the structural system of the house. Because the house is suspended on the side of a cliff, it is tethered to  the cliff by a tension cable that is tied into the rocky terrain. The house’s construction is rather interesting in addition to the steel structure integrated with tension cables; the house is actually one of the first uses of gunite . The house clings to the side of a steep cliff; it is perpendicularly suspended to take on the panoramic views of Los Angeles. Use white space efficiently

Proportion is used with scale to accurately depict or distract from an ideal in design and artwork. Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object, while the scale is the size of one object compared to the others. Proper measuring tools, such as measuring tape, laser distance measurers, and digital calipers, are necessary to avoid the consequences of inaccurate measurements. By taking accurate measurements, we can ensure that our spaces are well-proportioned and visually engaging. Inaccurate measurements can result in poorly scaled and proportioned spaces, lacking harmony and visual appeal.

Rules in Proportion & Scale That Nail Your Interior Design

Now you can too, and each room will look beautiful and make you feel right at home. Similarly, cushions on a sofa should leave 60% of the seating area clear. Perhaps you want to furnish shelving with books and objets to display? Devote 60% to the books and 40% to show off your favorite items and you will have the balance right.

For example, if the statement piece in a large room is a large sofa, then the wall colors, accessories, and other furnishings should be in proportion and scale to the same. Proportion is a crucial element of interior design that can make or break the look and feel of a room. One example of using proportion in interior design is by creating a balanced composition of furniture and decor.

By using proportion to create a focal point, you can add interest and depth to an otherwise simple room. With over 100 homes staged since Mid Modern Designs began, our interior designers have worked with all kinds of homes & condos. Let us help you proportion and scale your next project and give you a functional room accent you’ll enjoy for years to come. We've all seen an overstuffed sofa in a small room or a rectangular dish on a square table.

Proper proportion ensures that the size of each element in a room is well-suited to the space it occupies and the other elements around it. Here are a few areas of the home where proportion plays a significant role in interior design. One way to achieve proportion with art is to consider the size of the piece in relation to the wall it will be hung on. Large pieces of art can be used to create a focal point in a room, while smaller pieces can be grouped together to create a gallery wall. It’s important to consider the scale of the furniture in the room as well so that the art doesn’t overpower or get lost in the space.

Impact Of Texture and Harmony For Proportion

Because scale and proportion is mathematical and has a few more rules, we pulled together some great visuals and resources for you to download. When it comes to choosing furniture, make sure to factor in comfort and functionality. If your living room is reserved for Netflix binges, you don’t need a ton of furniture. On the other hand, if you host often, you’ll want to give your guests plenty of space to sit. People often choose pieces that are too big or too small for their space, particularly sofas. While you might be tempted to buy something that fits your whole family when they visit on Thanksgiving, remember Thanksgiving isn’t every day.

It’s also important to consider the style of the room, whether it’s modern, traditional, or eclectic, to ensure that the art and accessories fit with the overall aesthetic. The golden ratio is one of those design rules that are really helpful to use when creating a room scheme from scratch – or rebalancing an existing one. If you are just starting out in interior design or just need help creating balanced spaces, it's one of those design formulas that is worth referring to.

proportion in interior design

In interior design, this rule can be used to help direct your eye through a space. Think of your room divided into a grid of three columns and three rows. Place important pieces along those dividing lines or at their intersections. Another important aspect of using proportion and scale is to create a sense of balance in the room. It can be achieved using objects of similar size and shape in different room areas.

Proportion is all about the relationship between two pieces so dimensions are important. For the perfect chandelier width, add the length and width of your room and convert to inches. If your room has exceptionally high ceilings, you can afford to opt for grander dimensions like the chandelier – at 59 inches wide – in this project from Helen Green Design. The rule of thumb for coffee tables is to choose one which is between one half and two thirds of the length of the sofa.

Step back and see what can be removed or repositioned to create a more balanced look. Editing can also involve simplifying the color scheme or minimizing patterns and textures. Having a few statement pieces is okay, but they should enhance the overall design rather than detract from it. Proportion is a crucial element in interior design that helps create a harmonious and visually pleasing space.

To create a sense of proportion in a room, the focal point should be surrounded by smaller pieces that complement it, such as a round table with chairs placed around it in a dining room. For example, a higher ceiling will make a room feel larger — perfect for spaces like kitchens and living rooms. Conversely, a low ceiling will make these areas feel smaller than they are. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the most popular ways to use scale and proportion to the benefit of a space’s aesthetics. Scale refers to the size of an object, while proportion is about how objects relate to each other.

With dedication and practice, you can become proficient in using proportion and scale to create stunning interior designs. A general guideline many designers follow is ensuring that items in the room are not wider or taller than ⅓ the height of the item it is kept on. Understanding scale and proportion allows designers to factor in functionality, comfort, and aesthetics to provide the room with a more cohesive structure. For instance, a large piece of artwork on one wall can create a focal point that balances out a larger piece of furniture on the opposite wall.

Regarding proportion and scale, it’s not just about the relationship between objects in a room but also the individual objects themselves. For example, if a piece of furniture is too small for the space it’s in, it can look insignificant and out of place. On the other hand, if a piece of furniture is too large for the room, it can dominate the space and make it feel cramped. It’s vital to choose objects that are appropriately sized for the room, taking into account not just the dimensions of the space but also the other objects in it.

We hope this blog post has given you some useful information and inspiration on how to use space and proportion in interior design. Applying the rule of thirds in interior design results in a visually balanced and aesthetically pleasing composition, enhancing our spaces' overall appeal and harmony. This principle is closely linked to scale, although they are distinct concepts. Scale refers to how the size of one object relates to the human body, while proportion looks at the relationship between multiple objects.

'White House Plumbers' review: A laugh-out-loud spin on the Watergate break-in : NPR

white house plumbers

The ultimate political scandal has been an ever-flowing fount of pop culture practically since the moment resigned president Richard Nixon flashed double peace signs and boarded his helicopter out of Washington. Gordon Liddy, the lawyer and former F.B.I. agent played by Justin Theroux. Hunt and Liddy are well-known to historians and Watergate buffs, but they are — compared to a Dean, Haldeman or Mitchell — secondary players in a scandal that toppled a presidency and whose particulars have faded from the popular memory over five decades. Theroux invests his speech with a psychotic precision that doesn’t resemble the real Liddy, yet it gets the point across. Nothing in Hunt’s biography, on the other hand, seems especially humorous, but Harrelson plays him at medium-high boil, with a thrusting chin and gravelly voice and often in some sort of emotional extremity.

White House Plumbers — Limited Series

We certainly didn't lean into it, but we wanted it there. That kind of gives you a little bit of perspective, you get the modern-day perspective on Watergate and you kind of get this 50-year perspective on what's going on right now in our government. If Gordon Liddy existed nowadays, he'd be in a chat room somewhere.

Even though it came back to bite him, Nixon’s willingness to break the law — and order others to break it — does seem to mark the beginning of a win-by-any-means age. Right away, you know this new White House Plumbers series is in great hands. Specifically, it's in the hands of writers and creators Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck, both of whom worked on HBO's Veep and The Larry Sanders Show. The director of multiple episodes is David Mandel, who directed episodes of Veep and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

And the many executive producers include Frank Rich, who's also an executive producer on Succession. So this group knows how to tell a story in unexpected ways, and to find the humor even in the more serious situations. The actors Justin Theroux (left) and Woody Harrelson play G. Howard Hunt in the new HBO miniseries White House Plumbers. Professional plumbers do not expect a tip.

White House Plumbers review – you’ll give up on Woody Harrelson’s Watergate drama after one episode

This five-part limited series imagines the behind-the-scenes story of how Nixon’s political saboteurs, E. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), accidentally toppled the presidency they were zealously trying to protect… and their families along with it. Chronicling actions on the ground, this satirical drama begins in 1971 when the White House hires Hunt and Liddy, former CIA and FBI, respectively, to investigate the Pentagon Papers leak. After failing upward, the unlikely pair lands on the Committee to Re-Elect the President, plotting several unbelievable covert ops – including bugging the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex. Proving that fact is sometimes stranger than fiction, White House Plumbers sheds light on the lesser-known series of events that led to one of the greatest political scandals in American history. "White House Plumbers" is better before it gets to Watergate, with the first half depicting how Liddy and Hunt were bombastic but somehow good at their jobs, which helped them lead Nixon's corrupt Committee for the Re-election of the President.

Cast & Crew

That’s not to say that “White House Plumbers” isn’t interesting or watchable, or sometimes as funny as it wants to be; there’s too much talent behind and in front of the camera for that to be the case. There’s some fine bumbling in the burglary scenes. The production is first-rate, the period work never rings false, crowd scenes are not threadbare, and choice D.C.

He's actually oddly a very modern character who was mostly obsessed with getting famous, and he really didn't care how it happened. He would have been happy to have had some sort of a scandal. He talked a big game, but didn't actually serve in the war and never quite actually killed anyone and had these delusions. There's a desperation to him that's part of why he's so dangerous. Parts of White House Plumbers are laugh-out-loud outrageous – but other parts do make you feel for some of these people, and, of course, compare that scandal to more contemporary ones.

Top cast

They were called the Plumbers because, well, plumbers locate and stop leaks. Its attempts to be a jack of all trades sometimes make it a master of none. The pace is meandering, which is odd, considering there is so much happening, and it doesn’t pick up steam until well into episode two; Watergate non-aficionados may not make it that far. Theroux turns the volume up to 11 as Liddy, while Harrelson has more depth to find, with a more rounded backstory of family strife and money troubles.

Liddy calls black ops “black bag”, to the hilarity of the CIA stalwarts he is dealing with. Liddy is not a man who enjoys being laughed at, although the schemes he tries to pitch to Dean are frequently absurd. There are times, in reading this, playing it and watching it, where there's almost something kind of adorable or corny. Nixon could be shamed enough to actually resign. Whereas now there's been so many impeachments of both Republican and Democratic presidents.

There are nods to current populist rhetoric, particularly in some of Liddy and Hunt’s more provocative statements. “It’s just you and me against the entire radical left. Let the record show that Gordon Liddy shits red, white and blue,” barks Liddy. Hunt, a former CIA agent still fuming from the Bay of Pigs fiasco, and Liddy, whose tenure with the FBI did not end well, had plenty in common.

Together, they enact an on-again, off-again battling bromance — a temperamentally mismatched but ideologically compatible couple, as in countless buddy-cop flicks, with the difference being that they’re failures. Outside of home repair, the word “plumbers” nowadays most quickly brings to mind a pair of Italian brothers in overalls. In an earlier time, it might have conjured up the group behind the caper that led to a cover-up that led to a committee that led to a presidential resignation, and that has doomed us to live forever with the suffix “—gate” attached to any kind of scandal. The principals in this particular telling of the story are E. Howard Hunt, played by Woody Harrelson, and G.

Gordon Liddy are part of the "White House Plumbers". Charged with plugging press leaks by any means necessary, they accidentally overturned the Presidency they were trying to protect.

(The title comes from how they were known for "fixing leaks.") The series slightly elevates its comedy here. Harrelson and Theroux ham up liberally recounted events that have some shred of truth, and flourish in a passage about investigating the therapist of Daniel Ellsberg (who famously released the Pentagon Papers). We watch Liddy and Hunt, in bafflingly fake wigs, do dumb things like pose in front of the camera used during a break-in (only made worse when Hunt doesn’t take the film out before it reaches the authorities later on). It’s Coen brothers-lite with the bittersweetness of history and a looming sense of how ill-conceived each move is. Their patriotism isn’t just inflating their hubris; it will get them in serious trouble. A five-part series that tells the true story of how Nixon's own political saboteurs and Watergate masterminds, E.

Even with Julia Roberts as its star, Gaslit got lost in the avalanche of great television that continues to arrive, and White House Plumbers may share the same fate. Here, the mood is more satirical, and it veers into slapstick, although it tries to balance that with a strand of serious family and personal drama. It has a slick elegance to it, but it never quite feels as if it pulls the many elements together successfully.

What are the National Design Awards?

Wang and Levy lecture extensively, and they teach courses on time, electronics, hardware, programming, inflatables, and morphology at Pratt Institute, New York University, and the School for Poetic Computation. Their pedagogy extends into their Brooklyn home/studio where they host office hours to lend a hand or offer insight to anyone interested in figuring out how to make something themselves. Programs included a special reception and panel discussion as well as design-based, hands-on learning experiences for local K–12 schools, including DC Bilingual Public Charter School, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Phelps ACE Senior High School, and School Without Walls. Cooper Hewitt celebrated the National Design Awards in Los Angeles and San Francisco in February 2020 through a series of education programs that engaged with the public and students on the power of design.

Designers by Discipline

A 21st-century museum housed in New York City’s landmark Carnegie Mansion, Cooper Hewitt offers four floors of galleries dedicated to all disciplines of design, a permanent collection of more than 215,000 design objects fully digitized and available online, and a world-class design library. In addition to producing major special exhibitions, the museum continually refreshes the installation of objects from its collection of product design, decorative arts, works on paper, graphic design, textiles, wallcoverings, and digital materials. Interactive creative technologies invite visitors to freely explore the contents of the collection and experiment with the design process in collaboration with family, friends, and fellow visitors. Inclusive, innovative and experimental, the museum’s dynamic exhibitions, education programs, master’s program, publications and online resources inspire, educate and empower people through design. An integral part of the Smithsonian Institution—the world’s largest museum and research complex—Cooper Hewitt is located on New York City’s Museum Mile in the historic, landmark Carnegie Mansion.

A new HBO “slapstick tragedy” mostly avoids the Oval Office in favor of the men who actually executed the infamous burglary that brought down a president. Theroux and Mandel spoke to Morning Edition about what drew them to the series and how characters like Liddy paved the way for today's right-wing extremism. "White House Plumbers" premieres on HBO on May 1st. A podcast, a chat with his boss and a missing piece of the puzzle put Robbie Pickering on the set of the Watergate drama.

When he talks about his childhood, he depicts himself as this sort of scrawny Irish guy from Hoboken, a kid who got bullied a lot. And he would do these insane things to get over his fears. So he trapped a rat, killed it and then ate it. So he would strap himself to a tree during a thunder and lightning storm. And I had sympathy for him as this bullied kid.

Like some people who get bullied, they look for sources of strength in odd places. In 1972, they attempted to break into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate. They were caught, and the scandal ultimately led to Nixon's resignation two years later, after his administration repeatedly tried to cover up their involvement. "I certainly never thought of it as a comedy because to me, it's such a horrific period in American history," director David Mandel told NPR's Leila Fadel. "I keep calling it a tragedy that makes you laugh." And there are elements, of course, that speak to our present condition.

Casting

The dialogue is rich throughout White House Plumbers, and so are the performances and characters. Harrelson is wonderful — exploding like Ralph Kramden one minute, simmering like Macbeth the next — and the supporting cast is a very deep bench, serving up unexpected treasures every episode. There's Kathleen Turner as lobbyist Dita Beard! And Lena Headey from Game of Thrones as Hunt's wife, Dorothy! And Gary Cole as FBI executive Mark Felt – who, though he's not identified as such here, in real life was the infamous Deep Throat of All the President's Men. It opens with the second of four Watergate break-in attempts, and the emphasis is on how terrible these “plumbers” – so-called because they are brought together to “fix the leaks” coming out of the White House – actually are.

They both loved Nixon and hated John Kennedy and the counterculture, which they saw as a threat to patriotism and the American way of life. Dismissed by the White House press secretary as a “third-rate burglary,” the break-in set off a chain of events that ultimately led to the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon in August 1974. Ever since, the “gate” suffix has been shorthand for scandal, and Watergate has provided fodder for movies, books, podcasts, commentaries and television. However, it’s all about Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. Harrelson is the former CIA agent Hunt, who was “un-hireable when the agency dumped you”. He begins the series in a depressed state, reduced to churning out soul-sapping copy for a public-relations firm, and is someone who has strong opinions that he expresses with gusto. He rants about how Time magazine is “propaganda”, while his family falls apart around him. Lena Headey is his wife, Dorothy, an active CIA asset, who asks him to “try not to be such an asshole” while pleading with him to take some responsibility for his chaotic children. As Liddy, Theroux wears a grand moustache and kipper tie, or they wear him.

Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), the real-life blinkered zealots who, er, masterminded the break-in and took the brunt of the fall when everything went south. It’s a combination buddy comedy/buddy tragedy about a pair of true believers who keep charging ahead through blind loyalty and a desperate need to grind axes, even as the walls close in. We’ve seen the Watergate story through the eyes of the reporters who broke it (1976’s “All the President’s Men”). We’ve seen it through the eyes of White House counsel John Dean (the 1979 miniseries “Blind Ambition”). We’ve even seen it through the eyes of two teenage girls (the underappreciated 1999 comedy “Dick”).

Gordon Liddy, accidentally toppled the presidency they were trying to protect. With each episode directed by David Mandel (also a “Veep” alum, along with Gregory and Huyck), "White House Plumbers" initially gets considerable momentum from the weirdness of its two lead performances. Justin Theroux is about as pompous as he can be with the tar-black, openly fake-looking mustache of Liddy, paired neatly with the agent’s troubling love of Hitler’s speeches, guns, and propensity to keep his hand over a flame as a gesture of his trustworthiness.

But it’s more of a journalism thriller than a study of political scandal. Oliver Stone’s “Nixon” dips into Watergate, but within the larger context of the president operating behind the scenes. But there’s always another angle, and HBO’s five-part limited series “White House Plumbers” found a juicy one. Created by the team behind “Veep,” this is the Watergate of E.

Where is this procedural process that's going to happen? Plumbers charge $45 to $150 per hour, with the average job costing $125 to $450 total. Many plumbing companies have a minimum service fee of $50 to $200. Emergency plumbing contractors charge double or triple time on weekends, after hours, and holidays, or $125 to $170 per hour. Even in an era of Oscar winners commandeering the small screen, the cast is impressive. There are frequent moments of “Ah, it’s them”, as the stars keep on coming.

Just a short drive from Savannah, Georgia, this coastal community is in the perfect spot for a day trip. There's a little something for everyone from families to couples—South Beach is better for those who want a little excitement in their atmosphere, whereas North Beach is a bit more quiet and contained. I've found it particularly great for families (having traveled here with a multigenerational group ages 1-68), and recommend the kitschy Original Crab Shack for a memorable meal. Like Oak Bluffs, Newport is a beach town known for its houses, though a very different sort.

Our Moonlight Rooms are set on the second floor and each overlook the entire property, including our two swimming pools. The Moonlight’s design is whimsically reminiscent of an English country house – with its rich hues – paneled walls, wide-plank floors and beamed ceilings. You won't find bustling boardwalks, sleek hotels, or grids of cars with clunky bike racks trapped in traffic in Chincoteague. This coastal town is all about the wildlife—specifically its wild horses. Visitors flock to the island annually for the Pony Penning that has been held since 1925.

The most notable features at The Montauk Beach House are its two outdoor swimming pools and the large sun terrace. This is the central hub of the property, and where guests spend most of their time; either swimming and sunbathing by day, or partying by night. There are plenty of comfortable sun loungers and umbrellas, as well as showers. Every Saturday night a pool party is held with a live DJ.

Located just off Route 27, The Montauk Beach House boasts an outdoor swimming pool, gift shop, café and snack bar. Free Wi-Fi access is available.A flat-screen cable TV is included in each air conditioned guest room. Select rooms have a pool view.Guests can relax poolside or enjoy cocktails in the lounge. Clothing, beauty products and more are available in the gift shop. The Beach House in Montauk has a 24-hour front desk.A selection of small plates and sandwiches are available at the café and outdoor grill.

Our beautiful stand-alone claw foot bathtubs evoke a little sexiness. Low profile tray showers, and pedestal sinks are all complimented by oil rubbed bronze fittings and exposed rain-head showers. A concierge, a car rental desk and luggage storage are just some of the available services at the hotel. In fine weather, an outdoor terrace provides an ideal place to relax. Staying at The Montauk Beach House you will be situated in the heart of Downtown Montauk, a block away from the Atlantic Ocean surf beaches, and a short stroll to Montauk’s shops, restaurants, bars and cafés.

Ballard Outlet is your one-stop-shop for discounted and high-quality home furnishings and décor. As a subsidiary of the company, the outlets offer a selection of overstocked, discontinued, or slightly imperfect Ballard furniture from the retail product line. When they arrived, I could see that the hype was real.

With a commitment to exceptional quality and value, customers can trust that they are getting products that are not only stylish but also built to last. Ballard Designs counter stools and bar stools are very common at the outlet. They often have very popular styles, like the Bailey and Dayna stools, which are currently on sale online too. While the outlet has tons of discounted rugs, you can land some equally good deals by browsing clearance rugs here. I have delivery days listed in individual location updates linked at the top of the post.

What is Ballard Designs Outlet?

For those higher-than-normal discounts, you’ll want to swoop them up as soon as possible. They do sometimes change discounts during the day if enough inventory for that category has been sold. We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs.

Some pretty bed and bedding options are up for grabs at the outlet. Sadly, Ballard Designs Outlet does not provide an in-house delivery service. However, you can inquire with the store about any local delivery referrals they may have. Alternatively, you can consider my third-party delivery recommendations which may offer more affordable rates.

Some Ballard Designs Outlets offer a waiting list for specific items. When the desired item arrives at the outlet, you will receive a phone call to inform you that it is now in stock. If you are interested in this service, it’s a good idea to call your local outlet to inquire and add yourself to the list. When shopping for furniture at the Ballard Outlet, it’s crucial to thoroughly inspect each item as all sales are final. This will help ensure that you are completely satisfied with your purchase.

Can I call to see what is in stock at the outlet?

However, for the most up-to-date information, call ahead to your local outlet to confirm. Ballard Designs is a leading home furnishings and décor company that offers a wide range of stylish and high-quality products for customers. Founded in 1983, the company has a strong reputation for creating timeless designs that are both functional and beautiful. Love the Greek key and coral combo, and your curtain rings are perfect! The total cost was about $55 with tax for the panels, trim, and curtain rings. With the $350+ I saved, I can splurge on the cut pedestal vase, acrylic drapery rod, and leopard ottoman featured in the catalog.

I still have a ways to go for my office makeover, but I’ll definitely be asking myself, “What would Eddie Ross do? I want to be more daring and inject more personality, patterns, fabrics, gorgeous thrifted finds and colors into my home. All that said, you can see why I was thrilled to participate in Jess’ (from Domicile 37) challenge this month, and it’s all about how to achieve that oh-so-desireable Eddie Ross aesthetic.

You can find lots of Ballard Designs mirrors at the outlets. Keep a close eye on the clearance section to snag one online for a similar discount. Ballard Designs furniture is constantly changing at the outlet. Seeing a product online does not necessarily mean that it will be available at the outlet store.

The final purchase was curtain/drapery rings to achieve my Ballard Designs & Eddie Ross inspired look, and once the rings got a gold spray paint makeover, I was good to go. The Greek key ribbon is totally temporary, so if I find a ribbon I like better I can easily switch it out. I am an independent blogger and I am not affiliated with any company. The views and opinions expressed in this blog post are solely my own and based on my personal experiences. On top of their base discount, Ballard Designs Outlets are AMAZING at running frequent doorbuster promotions for super slashed prices. Outlet pricing typically starts at 50% off, but there are categories that may be more.

They also occasionally run special clearance promotions, where an additional percentage will be taken off these items. From furniture to lighting, bedding to rugs, and wall décor to accessories, customers can find stylish and functional products at a fraction of the cost. Note that the selection at the outlet may vary, so it’s best to check regularly for new arrivals. I’ve been swooning over his collaboration with Ballard Designs, as I told you all about last week. You see, I like Ballard Designs well enough, but throw Eddie into the mix and I’ve reached new fangirl heights.

Everhem’s café curtains come with more than a dozen customization options, including fabric, pleat style, lining, and hardware. After holding up each piece in various lighting throughout the day, I decided on the Bone hue with classic box pleats and matte black hardware to blend in with the window frames. Lastly, I loved the look of two curtains instead of a single panel, so we went that direction.

Negotiating at the outlet is not common practice, but there may be times they will work with you. They work hard to ensure that items or categories that need deeper discounting are, so you’ll likely be thrilled with the price. The measuring process on our initial call—yes, you can choose to talk to a real, live person—couldn’t have been simpler. Ahead of my scheduled chat with Kasandra, one of the customer support managers, she sent me a brief prep guide on products, tools, and more to have on hand. I hung them using a pinched pleat look that took me way longer than I thought it would, but I am so satisfied! I need to find one more spool of that ribbon so I can finish my other panel.

You can find the direct link in my online outlet roundup post. I snagged a $500 pivot mirror for $28 and some $150 bathroom towel bars for just $6 by browsing their online deals. Keep in mind that outlet prices are based on the full retail price and may not reflect any current online sales. Before making a purchase, check the Ballard Designs website to see if the item you’re interested in is available at a better price due to a current sale. If so, it might be wise to opt for the online purchase, as it also comes with a warranty. In addition, you can find items with red clearance tag prices for even steeper discounts.
